Sweeter kisses for Valentine’s Day.

Sweeter kisses for Valentine’s Day.

As a sign of affection, kissing has been around longer this VALENTINE. But did you know that kissing originated from the ancient practice of getting acquainted with other humans by sniffing each other?

Does your breath smell kissably fresh? The occasional garlicky meal aside, the number one cause of chronic bad breath is oral plaque, which can build up on your teeth, gums, and even your tongue.

A simple trick to check for bad breath. Try blowing up a balloon and then smelling the air as you let it out. If you don’t like the odor, think about changing your dental habits.

Be a fanatic about plaque removal. Brush your teeth and gums thoroughly at least twice a day and floss at least once. And check your tongue every week or so for whitish residue, which is likely due to accumulated plaque and food debris. Brushing or scraping your tongue can often clear up nagging bad breath.

Banish dry mouth. Nobody wants to kiss a parched mouth. Drinking eight glasses of water a day and chewing sugarless gum between meals keeps saliva flowing, which also helps wash away stinky plaque and food particles.

Get regular dental cleanings. Plaque has a tendency to harden into calculus (also called tartar) that can’t be removed with brushing and flossing. Professional cleanings eliminate this buildup, so it’s important to get one at least once every six months, along with your checkup.

5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday

5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday

1. Start with a good skin care routine

One of the most important features that can make you feel like a beauty queen is great skin. Although applying makeup can help you get flawless skin, adapting a good skin care routine can give a longer lasting beauty. You won’t even need to apply makeup if you have good skin.
We have different types of skin care services that can help you to have a very smooth and glowing skin.

2. Get whiter teeth

When you’re interacting with people, the first thing they’ll notice is your smile. This makes it important that you invest in good dental hygiene. Find the right toothbrush for your chompers and decide on whether you’ll need an electric toothbrush vs manual.

An electric toothbrush can give you a better clean, but you have to be careful in buying one. This type of toothbrush is a bit more expensive than your regular brush. Electric brushes can also differ in features, so make sure you know what you’re buying.
Electric toothbrush are available at Britannia - The Enclave.

3. Work on your posture

The way you stand and walk can affect how you feel. If you constantly slouch, you’ll feel less confident. It can decrease your self-esteem and it can make you frequently think negatively of yourself.

Proper posture isn’t only important in improving your self-confidence. It’s also a good way of preventing body pain and injuries.

When walking, you need to keep your chin parallel to the ground and your hips and buttons in line with your body. You should keep your back and shoulders aligned when you’re standing up. As for sitting, make sure your head is not tilted down.

4. Wear the right clothes

You don’t have to wear skimpy or revealing clothes just to feel and look beautiful. Instead, try to choose clothes that are appropriate yet comfortable.

Each person has a different body type so make sure to consider your size and height when buying clothes. It’s also a great idea to carefully select clothes based on fabric. For everyday wear, try to stick with clothes made of pure cotton to prevent itching and excessive sweating.

5. Keep your hair healthy

With celebrities and famous personalities changing hair color and style frequently, it’s easy to feel tempted to do the same thing. Unfortunately, however, frequent hair treatments, such as using dyes and straighteners can adversely affect the health of your hair.

I hope you Enjoy the post and know about 5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday.

Are our children’s teeth getting worse?

Are our children’s teeth getting worse?

If you’re a parent, you’ll know children love eating and drinking all the wrong things! In fact, it can sometimes be difficult to get them to see the importance of looking after their teeth. And it can be even more worrying to hear that statistics have shown a decline in children’s oral health over recent years.

The consequences of childhood tooth decay

Not many people realize that tooth decay is actually one of the biggest childhood diseases. It can have painful consequences that require physical treatment, potentially leading to bite problems as the child grows older and impacting self-esteem and confidence.
Thankfully, this disease is entirely preventable!
Teaching our children how to brush thoroughly plays a key role in keeping them as healthy and happy as possible. And bringing your child in for regular dental appointments can help them feel more comfortable with the surgery and aware of the role diet plays in maintaining strong teeth and a healthy body.
It’s also great to know that, as a whole, dental health is improving. A Department of Health spokesperson said: “Children’s teeth are dramatically healthier than they were 10 years ago, but we still know there is more to do.”

What is good dental health for children?

It’s recommended that babies and children see a dentist at least once a year, but any follow-up sessions will be determined at each check-up. Brushing your child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes (always last thing before bed) will ensure you keep tooth decay at bay.
Offering children water, sugar-free juices or milk in between meals is one of the best ways to keep them smiling healthily. It’s also a good idea to try and keep sugar consumption to once a day, preferably before a meal, and opt for dark chocolate over milk.
But one of the best ways we recommend to teach your child about good dental health is to lead by example. Prioritize your own oral health and they’ll develop the right attitude to ensuring their teeth stay in top condition.

Why is smoking bad for your oral health?

Why is smoking bad for your oral health?

You have likely heard time and again that smoking and chewing tobacco products can have a serious impact on your oral health. But what does smoking actually do to your mouth and why is it such an issue? Read on to discover the real reasons why smoking is one of the most destructive habits when it comes to your oral health and the serious health risks that come with it.

Yellowing stains

Smoking is well known for the yellowing effect it has on teeth. This discolouration is actually stains left by the nicotine and tar found in cigarettes and other tobacco products. Yellowed teeth can be extremely difficult to whiten, depending on how deep the stains actually are and for how long they have been exposed to the various chemicals found in tobacco products. Exposing your teeth to these chemicals weakens the tooth enamel, the protective layer that cannot be replaced, causing teeth to become vulnerable and allowing stains to become deeply set into teeth.

Rotting teeth

Because the chemicals in tobacco products weaken the tooth’s protective enamel, teeth become more susceptible to bacteria, acids, and other destructive substances. With no protective layer, these substances can eat away at teeth and eventually cause them to rot right down to the tooth root. This can be extremely painful and can cause teeth to become loose, requiring removal, and even falling out. This rotting can also lead to infection which leads to even larger issues. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the blood, which your body needs in order to fight these infections. Being less able to naturally fight infection can also lead to major issues such as gum disease.

Gum disease

Decreased levels of oxygen in the blood leads to a weakened immune system and leaves your mouth vulnerable to infection. This means that bacteria found in your mouth can more easily build-up and infiltrate your gums. The bacteria can quickly destroy gum flesh, causing it to recede and become loose and unhealthy. The gums help to anchor teeth in place, so when their health is compromised teeth can become loose and potentially fall out. When gum disease progresses it can affect the bones and surrounding flesh, causing them to break down, too. Studies have shown that those who smoke are two times more likely to contract gum disease than those who don’t.

Oral cancer

Tobacco products such as cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco, and others are highly carcinogenic. The chemicals found in these products have been cited as a leading causes of many cancers, including oral cancer. According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, there are over 7,000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke, including over 70 known to cause cancer. Oral cancer is especially dangerous in that, generally those who have it are unaware of it in the early stages since it does not produce painful side effects until it has spread. Historically, over 75% of people over the age of 50 who have had oral cancer were regular tobacco smokers at one point in their life. Oral cancer can take many forms including unexplained bumps, bleeding, swelling, numbness, pain, and difficulty swallowing.

Tooth sensitivities

Because smoking weakens or erodes tooth enamel, smokers’ teeth are often vulnerable and can become extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This can be quite painful and very restricting when it comes to food and drink.
These issues need to be addressed as soon as possible as can quickly lead to bigger dental issues.

7 Yellowing Drinks to Avoid This Holiday Season

7 Yellowing Drinks to Avoid This Holiday Season

Coffee

Coffee is well-known for it’s teeth staining capabilities and for good reason: it’s both darkly coloured, thanks to a substance it contains called tannins, and it’s highly acidic. It’s dark colouring can transfer to teeth through prolonged and frequent exposure, giving teeth a yellow coloured stain. The acid in coffee eats away at tooth enamel if not properly and quickly removed. Once the enamel is weakened, the layer below the enamel, known as the dentin, and it’s more yellow colouring is exposed, giving teeth a stained look. So, when you catch up with someone over coffee during the holidays, consider adding milk to your java to tone down its staining affects or switch it out for another beverage entirely.

Tea

While teas are generally much less acidic than coffee, they do still contain tannins that can deposit on your teeth and discolour them. Be aware that different teas have different colouring effects on teeth when consumed in large amounts. Green teas will leave a more gray coloured stain while black teas leave a yellow stain, similar to coffee. If you want to keep enjoying your tea this season, go for higher quality teas as they will deposit less colour on your teeth than cheaper options.

Sports and energy drinks

If you are making an effort to boost your energy levels this holiday, consuming sports or energy drinks won’t do any favours for your smile. Full of acids, both are destructive to the protective enamel coating of teeth and can corrode it away while creating a breeding ground for bacteria with their sugar content. Energy drinks are especially acidic, making them even more of a danger to enamel. Try foregoing sports and energy drinks altogether and favour restful sleep and proper hydration instead to boost your energy.

Red wine

Like coffee and tea, red wine also contains stain-causing tannins which can leave teeth with a lacklustre gray colouring. All types of red wine will have this outcome and the effect will get worse if it’s frequently consumed. Keep a toothbrush handy and, if you do decide to indulge in a glass of red wine, brush your teeth soon after to eliminate the chances of the colouration depositing onto your teeth.

White wine

Contrary to popular belief, white wine is not a great alternative to red wine if you are looking for an option that doesn’t yellow teeth. White wine, while light in colour, is more acidic than red wine and is harmful to tooth enamel in much the same way that coffee is. When left in contact with teeth, this acid breaks down the protective outer layer of the tooth and exposes its yellowish inner layer, which can look like staining. If you do want to enjoy white wine this season, follow it with water to keep acids from sticking to teeth.

Fruit juices

Fruit juices, especially berry or citrus fruit juices, are full acids and sugars. This is a dangerous combination for teeth as the acids break down the outer layer of teeth, exposing the vulnerable dentin, and sugars offer a breeding ground for bacteria which can attack the inner part of the tooth and cause cavities. The yellowing effect can come from both a buildup of bacteria, plaque and tartar and the exposed inner layer of teeth. If you’re looking for hydration, water is the best and healthiest way to quench your thirst.

Carbonated drinks

Any beverage with carbonation is acidic. This is because the bubbles of carbonation are actually carbon dioxide and when you drink it, the gas goes through a chemical reaction in your mouth which turns it into an acid. This acid, again, is very harmful to tooth enamel as it weakens it, makes the tooth more vulnerable, and exposes its yellow inner layers. Pops and carbonated juices with sugar are especially destructive as the sugar promotes the growth of bacteria as well as exposing your teeth to acids. Favour non-carbonated drinks as you enjoy your holiday season and you won’t have to worry about yellowing teeth in the new year.

Tips for a healthy Christmas

Tips for a healthy Christmas

Here are some tips to keep your waistline from competing against Santa’s this holiday season:
Learn to say no
Just because you’re being offered food at  party doesn’t mean you have to eat it. The normal laws of weight gain and weight loss do not change during the holiday season; you’ve worked hard all year to fit into that gorgeous dress, why spoil it now? If you want to avoid this, never go to a party with an empty-stomach – have a healthy snack like a fruit or some high-fibre biscuits before you leave. This will keep hunger pangs at bay and your gorging desires in check.
Keep a check on alcohol consumption
It’s hard to find a Christmas or New Year party where booze isn’t being served. While it’s the holiday season and we don’t want to sound like a grumpy grandma the fact is that too much alcohol, in fact even a little of it is bad for your body. Not only does alcohol have very high calorie content, it also lowers your inhibition which means that you won’t be watching what you eat and piling on more pounds. Also it takes your body a long time to process alcohol and keeps your liver working overtime. Think before you drink, you’re the one who will have to live with the hangover, damaged liver and beer belly tomorrow.
Don’t stop exercising
One mistake a lot of people make is that they stop exercising completely during the holiday season. While gyms can be closed for a while you can try various other alternatives like walking, running, jogging, cycling or you could concentrate on a particular body part like abs for the holiday season.
A little vigilance, moderation and common sense will go a long way in ensuring that you don’t put on any weight this holiday season. We from Britannia Medical Center - The Enclave wish you a very Healthy and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
