Summer Snacks that Are Harming Your Teeth

Summer Snacks that Are Harming Your Teeth

During the warm summer months, there are tons of yummy foods available for us to snack on – fresh fruit, delicious salads, and mouthwatering barbecue. But not all of these foods are healthy for your teeth. At Britannia - The Enclave, we’d like to talk about smile-friendly summer snacks.

As we all know, limiting the amount of sugary foods and drinks we consume is important for dental health. In the summertime, many people are quick to turn to soda, sweet tea, and sports drinks to quench their thirst. While most of these can succeed at making us less thirsty, they can also contribute to tooth damage. Instead of choosing all the sugary options available, opting for water is a smarter decision that your smile will thank you for. If you must have a soda or sports drink, try drinking it with a straw to limit how much of the liquid gets on your teeth.

Another popular beverage of choice during the summer is iced coffee. Regular morning coffee drinkers tend to drink more iced coffee when the weather is hot. The problem is that iced coffee isn’t typically just enjoyed in the morning, but rather throughout the day. By doing this, you’re increasing the amount of time your teeth are exposed to the sugar and acid, and allowing the opportunity for more damage to occur as well as staining.

Even though citrus foods are delicious, they aren’t the best snacking choices for a strong and healthy smile. Fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are extremely acidic. The acid in these foods can damage tooth enamel which can eventually lead to decay and cavities. A good way to avoid this damage is to rinse with water after eating an acidic fruit. The water will neutralize that acid and it won’t have a chance to harm your teeth.

One last smile-damaging snack of summer is barbeque. This doesn’t mean you have to completely avoid all cookouts this year, it just means that all of us at Britannia - The Enclave encourage you to moderate the amount of barbeque you eat, specifically the sauce. Barbeque sauce is acidic, and as we’ve already covered above, acid is bad for your teeth. Not only that, the dyes used in many sauces can cause discoloration.

So instead of loading up on fruits, soda, and barbeque sauce this summer, make more smile-conscious choices like fresh vegetables, water, and calcium-rich cheese. Not only will your summer snacks taste awesome, it will make your dentist in Clinton Township, and your smile, happy.

An Expert Guide to Gorgeous Summer Skin

An Expert Guide to Gorgeous Summer Skin

Summers are kind, but only to your wardrobe. Florals and fluorescents make a smashing comeback and jeans and pants pave way for skirts and shorts. But when it comes to your skin, summers are the biggest threat. The dry, humid heat leaves you with stretchy, leather-like, patchy skin, and huge pores.

So give your skin the care it truly deserves. Here are some tips, tricks that will give your harsh and dull skin an instant uplift.

Exfoliate. Since we’re showing off so much more skin in the summer months, we want it to be soft and smooth. Keep in mind that exfoliation reveals new skin that is more prone to sunburn. Reserve your exfoliation for the evening or for days when you aren’t heading straight from the shower to the beach.
Fight body acne. Many people are prone to acne in the summertime. If you’ve got some on your face, arms and/or back, consider an acne-fighting body wash to help clear it up.
Use sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 30 minutes before heading outdoors. If you’re outside all day, reapply at least every two hours; and every 80 minutes if you’re sweating or swimming. Remember, the number-one cause of premature aging is sun damage.
Stay moisturized. Moisturizing in the summer is just as important as moisturizing in the winter. Apply a light moisturizer to protect your skin from summertime drying agents like sunburns, salt and chlorine.
Hat head. Wearing a hat is a fun and functional way to protect your head and face from the sun’s harmful rays, and they can really ramp up your summer style. Think of your hat as an umbrella for your head! Make sure you choose something with a brim that’s large enough to keep the sun off of your face and neck.
Hydrate. Drinking water is so important during the summer. Not only will it help clear out acne, but it will also keep your skin looking fresh and youthful. And remember, as Dr. Murad says, “eat your water” in the form of water-rich fruits and vegetables.

5 Dental Tips for When You Go on a Vacation

5 Dental Tips for When You Go on a Vacation

Your toothbrush – don’t leave home without it

Stick to your routine — continue to brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss daily. Carry travel-sized packets of floss or dental picks in your purse or pocket if you’ll be out for most of the day. If you’re travelling, a collapsible toothbrush and a roll of floss fit nicely into your purse or carry-on luggage. If you have a cottage, stock up on toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste for the season.

Be prepared

Do your research before your trip on the dental care available in the area where you will be staying. Get the details of BRITANNIA - THE ENCLAVE for more information on office hours. This will save you precious time in case of a dental emergency.

Eat healthy

Indulging in sweet and sticky foods while on vacation may be fun, but try to minimize the amount you consume. Keep those s’mores around the campfire to a minimum. Best bet? Stick to fruits and vegetables as they contain the essential vitamins and minerals teeth and gums need to stay strong and healthy.

Drink plenty of water, every day. It is the best way to stay hydrated, no matter if you’re sitting on a beach or hiking in the hills.

Beware the rays

Moderate exposure to sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D, which is used by the body to absorb calcium and phosphorous, helping to keep teeth and bones strong. However, prolonged exposure to the sun can increase your risk of cancers, including to the lips and the mouth.

Sweeter kisses for Valentine’s Day.

Sweeter kisses for Valentine’s Day.

As a sign of affection, kissing has been around longer this VALENTINE. But did you know that kissing originated from the ancient practice of getting acquainted with other humans by sniffing each other?

Does your breath smell kissably fresh? The occasional garlicky meal aside, the number one cause of chronic bad breath is oral plaque, which can build up on your teeth, gums, and even your tongue.

A simple trick to check for bad breath. Try blowing up a balloon and then smelling the air as you let it out. If you don’t like the odor, think about changing your dental habits.

Be a fanatic about plaque removal. Brush your teeth and gums thoroughly at least twice a day and floss at least once. And check your tongue every week or so for whitish residue, which is likely due to accumulated plaque and food debris. Brushing or scraping your tongue can often clear up nagging bad breath.

Banish dry mouth. Nobody wants to kiss a parched mouth. Drinking eight glasses of water a day and chewing sugarless gum between meals keeps saliva flowing, which also helps wash away stinky plaque and food particles.

Get regular dental cleanings. Plaque has a tendency to harden into calculus (also called tartar) that can’t be removed with brushing and flossing. Professional cleanings eliminate this buildup, so it’s important to get one at least once every six months, along with your checkup.

5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday

5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday

1. Start with a good skin care routine

One of the most important features that can make you feel like a beauty queen is great skin. Although applying makeup can help you get flawless skin, adapting a good skin care routine can give a longer lasting beauty. You won’t even need to apply makeup if you have good skin.
We have different types of skin care services that can help you to have a very smooth and glowing skin.

2. Get whiter teeth

When you’re interacting with people, the first thing they’ll notice is your smile. This makes it important that you invest in good dental hygiene. Find the right toothbrush for your chompers and decide on whether you’ll need an electric toothbrush vs manual.

An electric toothbrush can give you a better clean, but you have to be careful in buying one. This type of toothbrush is a bit more expensive than your regular brush. Electric brushes can also differ in features, so make sure you know what you’re buying.
Electric toothbrush are available at Britannia - The Enclave.

3. Work on your posture

The way you stand and walk can affect how you feel. If you constantly slouch, you’ll feel less confident. It can decrease your self-esteem and it can make you frequently think negatively of yourself.

Proper posture isn’t only important in improving your self-confidence. It’s also a good way of preventing body pain and injuries.

When walking, you need to keep your chin parallel to the ground and your hips and buttons in line with your body. You should keep your back and shoulders aligned when you’re standing up. As for sitting, make sure your head is not tilted down.

4. Wear the right clothes

You don’t have to wear skimpy or revealing clothes just to feel and look beautiful. Instead, try to choose clothes that are appropriate yet comfortable.

Each person has a different body type so make sure to consider your size and height when buying clothes. It’s also a great idea to carefully select clothes based on fabric. For everyday wear, try to stick with clothes made of pure cotton to prevent itching and excessive sweating.

5. Keep your hair healthy

With celebrities and famous personalities changing hair color and style frequently, it’s easy to feel tempted to do the same thing. Unfortunately, however, frequent hair treatments, such as using dyes and straighteners can adversely affect the health of your hair.

I hope you Enjoy the post and know about 5 Easy Tips to Feel Like a Beauty Queen Everyday.

Are our children’s teeth getting worse?

Are our children’s teeth getting worse?

If you’re a parent, you’ll know children love eating and drinking all the wrong things! In fact, it can sometimes be difficult to get them to see the importance of looking after their teeth. And it can be even more worrying to hear that statistics have shown a decline in children’s oral health over recent years.

The consequences of childhood tooth decay

Not many people realize that tooth decay is actually one of the biggest childhood diseases. It can have painful consequences that require physical treatment, potentially leading to bite problems as the child grows older and impacting self-esteem and confidence.
Thankfully, this disease is entirely preventable!
Teaching our children how to brush thoroughly plays a key role in keeping them as healthy and happy as possible. And bringing your child in for regular dental appointments can help them feel more comfortable with the surgery and aware of the role diet plays in maintaining strong teeth and a healthy body.
It’s also great to know that, as a whole, dental health is improving. A Department of Health spokesperson said: “Children’s teeth are dramatically healthier than they were 10 years ago, but we still know there is more to do.”

What is good dental health for children?

It’s recommended that babies and children see a dentist at least once a year, but any follow-up sessions will be determined at each check-up. Brushing your child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes (always last thing before bed) will ensure you keep tooth decay at bay.
Offering children water, sugar-free juices or milk in between meals is one of the best ways to keep them smiling healthily. It’s also a good idea to try and keep sugar consumption to once a day, preferably before a meal, and opt for dark chocolate over milk.
But one of the best ways we recommend to teach your child about good dental health is to lead by example. Prioritize your own oral health and they’ll develop the right attitude to ensuring their teeth stay in top condition.

Why is smoking bad for your oral health?

Why is smoking bad for your oral health?

You have likely heard time and again that smoking and chewing tobacco products can have a serious impact on your oral health. But what does smoking actually do to your mouth and why is it such an issue? Read on to discover the real reasons why smoking is one of the most destructive habits when it comes to your oral health and the serious health risks that come with it.

Yellowing stains

Smoking is well known for the yellowing effect it has on teeth. This discolouration is actually stains left by the nicotine and tar found in cigarettes and other tobacco products. Yellowed teeth can be extremely difficult to whiten, depending on how deep the stains actually are and for how long they have been exposed to the various chemicals found in tobacco products. Exposing your teeth to these chemicals weakens the tooth enamel, the protective layer that cannot be replaced, causing teeth to become vulnerable and allowing stains to become deeply set into teeth.

Rotting teeth

Because the chemicals in tobacco products weaken the tooth’s protective enamel, teeth become more susceptible to bacteria, acids, and other destructive substances. With no protective layer, these substances can eat away at teeth and eventually cause them to rot right down to the tooth root. This can be extremely painful and can cause teeth to become loose, requiring removal, and even falling out. This rotting can also lead to infection which leads to even larger issues. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the blood, which your body needs in order to fight these infections. Being less able to naturally fight infection can also lead to major issues such as gum disease.

Gum disease

Decreased levels of oxygen in the blood leads to a weakened immune system and leaves your mouth vulnerable to infection. This means that bacteria found in your mouth can more easily build-up and infiltrate your gums. The bacteria can quickly destroy gum flesh, causing it to recede and become loose and unhealthy. The gums help to anchor teeth in place, so when their health is compromised teeth can become loose and potentially fall out. When gum disease progresses it can affect the bones and surrounding flesh, causing them to break down, too. Studies have shown that those who smoke are two times more likely to contract gum disease than those who don’t.

Oral cancer

Tobacco products such as cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco, and others are highly carcinogenic. The chemicals found in these products have been cited as a leading causes of many cancers, including oral cancer. According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, there are over 7,000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke, including over 70 known to cause cancer. Oral cancer is especially dangerous in that, generally those who have it are unaware of it in the early stages since it does not produce painful side effects until it has spread. Historically, over 75% of people over the age of 50 who have had oral cancer were regular tobacco smokers at one point in their life. Oral cancer can take many forms including unexplained bumps, bleeding, swelling, numbness, pain, and difficulty swallowing.

Tooth sensitivities

Because smoking weakens or erodes tooth enamel, smokers’ teeth are often vulnerable and can become extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This can be quite painful and very restricting when it comes to food and drink.
These issues need to be addressed as soon as possible as can quickly lead to bigger dental issues.
